These in-duct lamp models do not provide particulate filtration . They are primarily designed for homeowners who already have an upgraded particulate filtration unit like the CAP50, CAP100, Aprilaire HEPA Filter, Trane CleanEffects filter or similar High Efficiency filter and want to augment it with the benefits of germicidal UV-C or UV Plus. All models are Class II medical devices.

Germicidal UV (UV-C) has been used to control bacteria and other bioaerosols, and for odor control in hospitals, food processing and the pharmaceutical industry for more than 50 years. Now, the CAP500 Series Germicidal UV Air Purifiers bring high-performance UV technology to homeowners.

The powerful CAP500 models are specially designed to help control the formation of molds, bacteria and other health-threatening microbes that can live and multiply inside the crevices of a forced-air HVAC system. In addition, cooking, pet and tobacco odors are eliminated by the UV disinfection power of the CAP500 germicidal lamp.

The CAP500-UV model is equipped with a powerful germicidal UV-C lamp that produces no ozone. The CAP500-UV unit provides best results in above-coil installations. This location allows the lamp to continuously irradiate bacteria, viruses and other microbes on the exposed surfaces of the coil fins to high levels of germicidal UV.

The CAP500-UVP model is equipped with a UV Plus lamp that combines a high-performance germicidal UV-C lamp with photolysis for the strongest defense against the formation of molds and mold-related odors. The CAP500-UVP must be installed on the return side to allow for the oxidized gas reaction to penetrate into the downstream HVAC components most susceptible to mold growth and microbial odor generation. The CAP500-UVP is especially effective against organisms that may be growing in the nooks and crannies of the heat exchanger and in other locations difficult to expose to UV light.

The Aprilaire� Spacegard Media Air Cleaner is a silent, low-maintenance, inexpensive air filtration system. The Spacegard Media Air Cleaner utilizes a simple, remarkably effective HEPA-type filtering media that actually improves its particulate-capturing capability the longer it is used. For particles larger than five microns, efficiency reaches 99%. Even the smallest particles, as small as one micron, can be filtered out at 95% effectiveness. The Spacegard Media Air Cleaner high-density filter unit is attached to your existing heating or cooling system, where it captures pollutants from conditioned air before it is distributed to the rooms of your home.

Molds and other fungi often thrive in the damp, dark and dirty recesses of an HVAC system. They have a much more complex cell structure than bacteria and viruses, and are typically much more resistant to germicidal UV-C, often requiring up to 100 times more exposure for an effective "kill" rate. Some homes also have higher levels of odors from ill family members, cooking, smoking, pets, fireplaces, wood stoves and other sources.

For these reasons, each series of CAP products includes a model equipped with our unique UV Plus lamp technology. UV Plus lamps generate 254 nanometers UV-C, and also generate a second frequency of UV at 180 to 200 nanometers. This UV-C wavelength causes an oxidation reaction known as photolysis, which in turn generates a controlled amount of trivalent oxygen, or ozone. Ozone is used throughout the world for air and water purification and deodorization applications, such as purifying the bottled water we drink. This powerful oxidizer breaks down unpleasant odors, and provides increased effectiveness against molds and mold products.

Ultraviolet energy is a part of the spectrum of electromagnetic energy generated by the sun. There are three frequency bands within the UV spectrum, none of which are visible to humans. UV-A, also known as �black light.� is harmless. UV-B rays can cause sunburn. UV-C, which is generated in wavelengths between about 180 and 280 nanometers, is also known as germicidal UV or UVGI. The most effective germicidal wavelength is 254 nanometers, which in sufficient dosage can create a chemical reaction that alters the structure of microorganisms and �kills� them by destroying their ability to reproduce and colonize.

Your CAP500-UV and CAP500-UVP includes both visual and audible indicators that monitor the lamp's status:

Green Light: Indicates the lamp is operating within an acceptable range;
Yellow Light: Indicated the lamp should be replaced soon;
Red Light: Indicates the lamp in inoperable.

An audible 'chirp' begins when the Yellow light appears. The 'chirping' alarm can be shut-off without replacing the lamp.
